Frequently Asked Questions
What does 2SLGBTQIA+ stand for?
2SLGBTQIA+ stands for Two-Spirited (a term often used in indigenous communities in Canada to describe people who don’t identify as heterosexual or cis-gendered), Lesbian (women who are attracted to women), Gay (men who are attracted to men), Bisexual (people that are attracted to both sexes), Trans (people who do not identify as the gender they were assigned at birth), Queer (essentially, different from the ‘norm’), Intersex (containing elements of both biological sexes), Asexual (not sexually oriented), and + (everything else!). We know it’s a mouthful but it’s meaningful to identify and validate ourselves and our lived identities and experiences.
Why does the 2SLGBTQIA+ movement exist?
The 2SLGBTQIA+ movement exists to advocate for equal rights and protections for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada in 1969, following activism and protest by members of the community. The fight has continued through the last 5+ decades, leading to more victories such as the right to marry, adopt children, and be free from discrimination at work and in public. 2SLGBTQIA+ people are everywhere and deserve equality and respect, but fear and hatred still exist, and this is why our movement persists.
What does the 2SLGBTQIA+ movement do?
Our movement focuses on building community, educating the public, creating safe spaces and achieving legal reforms and equal treatment. We are also here to celebrate our successes and the freedoms we enjoy today because of the efforts of generations before us. By refusing to be silent or diminished, we hope to help all people to live their truest lives.
Why are people 2SLGBTQIA+?
The exact causes of sexual orientation and gender diversity in human beings (and other species) are unknown, but it’s safe to say that deviation from the so-called norm of heterosexuality and cis-gender identity has existed for as long as human beings have been keeping records of their existence. Additionally, gender fluidity and same-sex attraction and partnerships have been documented in over 1500 different species to date, meaning it is not just human beings that exhibit these traits. Definitions of masculinity and femininity have varied over time and through culture and are constantly shifting and evolving as we do. One thing is certain: people of all gender identities and sexual orientations are important and deserve love and equal rights as much as whoever and whatever may be considered “normal”, and have just as much to contribute to our society as anyone else!
When did the Annapolis Royal Pride movement start?
The first Pride event was a Pride-themed day at the famous Annapolis Royal Farmer and Traders Market in 2017. It was organized after a homophobic incident at the market, which galvanized the community to demonstrate its commitment to be a safe and welcoming space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, which includes vendors, staff and the public. From there, the movement evolved to organize an annual Pride Parade on St. George St., and has grown to include a whole weekend of activities in and around Annapolis Royal.
Is the AR Pride movement only for people and organizations in Annapolis Royal?
No! While we are based in Annapolis Royal, AR Pride is for everyone in Annapolis County. Our goal is to make the county a safe, welcoming and accepting place for people of all sexual orientations and gender expressions. So whether you are in Bear River, Cornwallis, Bridgetown, Lawrencetown, Middleton, Port Lorne, Hampton, Parker’s Cove or anywhere in between, you are invited to be part of AR Pride!
